Eastern Gray Squirrel, New York, USA


The Eastern Gray Squirrel, scientifically known as Sciurus carolinensis, is a familiar sight across the eastern United States and southern Canada. Commonly referred to as the Gray Squirrel, this adaptable species thrives in a variety of environments, including urban parks, where it can reach impressive densities per hectare. I first encountered this species when I moved to the USA, and I was struck by how common it is here compared to other continents. 

The Eastern Gray Squirrel is listed as Least Concern due to its wide distribution, large population, and presence in numerous protected areas. Its ability to tolerate habitat disturbances has contributed to its increasing numbers, making it a resilient member of the wildlife community on the East Cost.
